Farmers market outside city hall (sonya kovacic)

Every Saturday when I was growing up my grandma, who emigrated from Serbia in the early 90's, would take the green line from Brookline to the outdoor produce market known as Haymarket. Outdoor markets are commonplace in many countries around the world, and my grandma felt at home. She also found the best deals.

Haymarket has been open along Blackstone street (one of the oldest streets in Boston) since the 1830's and was informally open for even longer. To this day, the market is open on Fridays and Saturdays and has survived through urban renewable projects like the Central Artery Project.

In July 2015, a year round market called the Boston Public Market will open directly above the Haymarket train station.

Take a look at historic photos and postcards of Haymarket.
